Chagas disease is found mainly in endemic areas of 21 continental Latin American countries (1), where it is mostly vector-borne transmitted to humans by contact with faeces or urine of triatomine bugs, known as 'kissing bugs', among many other popular names, depending on the geographical area.

If you live in a high-risk area for Chagas disease, these steps can help you prevent infection: Avoid sleeping in a mud, thatch or adobe house. These types of residences are more likely to harbor triatomine bugs. Use insecticide-soaked netting over your bed when sleeping in thatch, mud or adobe

Chagas disease is a severe complication of a kissing bug's bite. It's caused by being infected with a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi that lives in a kissing bug's intestines and feces.

Blood-feeding insects called triatomine bugs (kissing bugs) are the most common way Chagas disease spreads. The parasite lives in the bug's gut and is spread through its feces (poop). The bug bites, then defecates (poops), and the parasite enters a bite wound, eyes, nose or mouth. Some species of kissing bugs spread the disease more easily.
